I am often asked my opinion on whether to use certain songs as a first dance song. Couples may love the lyrics of a particular song, but want to know if they can really dance to it.
Today, I will review Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” from his 2012 album, Love Is A Four Letter Word.
This song has meaningful lyrics that are perfectly appropriate for a wedding. The lyrics “I won’t give up on us” re-emphasize the vows you just took during the ceremony, so it’s a nice way to make another promise to each other during your first dance. I also think the lyrics would be fun to listen to while practicing your first dance. Sometimes learning to dance together is a little rough or frustrating, and it would be a good reminder to not give up on each other.
Unfortunately, this song is not an easy one for dancing. For couples who are more musically-inclined or who are willing to put in the time to practice, I think it might work. But the timing is a bit difficult and the lyrical cues are a bit hard to follow.
I also feel like this song is a little less hopeful in tone than some of the other Jason Mraz wedding favorites and it doesn’t end on a particularly positive note.
Because of the great lyrics, I would love to see the right couple dance to this song. With some solid lessons, lots of practice and an open mind, a first dance to this song could be beautiful. However, be warned that it may be quite difficult and frustrating if you plan on winging it on the day of your wedding. (I never recommend winging it anyway!)
If you love Jason Mraz, check out “I’m Yours” and “Lucky” with Colbie Caillat as alternate first dance choices. Both have wedding appropriate lyrics and are easier to dance to than “I Won’t Give Up.”
