First Dance Song Review: The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson

I know, I know. This song is old news. I can hardly believe how much time has passed (and how many artists have borrowed her sound) since Ingrid Michaelson first came onto the music scene. When this song came on my Pandora recently, I was reminded why her video for “The Way I Am” has more than 12 million views on YouTube.

The Pros

For the slightly less traditional couple, Michaelson’s song “The Way I Am” offers a bit of playful humor to lighten the mood of the first dance. I like this song for an easy-going couple at a casual-ish wedding. There are really no rules when choosing a first dance song, but this one does have a laid back vibe that feels more appropriate for a reception at the beach, outdoors or at an art gallery-type venue. Just be sure to ask yourself if you are comfortable with the line, “I’d buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair,” before you commit.

Recommendation

Beyond the quirkiness, there are really no negatives to this song. It’s short, sweet and very danceable. And the drum beat is even a little sexy. Rumba anyone?

Here are the lyrics. Adorbs.

If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I’d find a match
‘Cause I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am

If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching, I’ll make it better
‘Cause I love the way you call me, baby
And you take me the way I am

I’d buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear
‘Cause I love you more than I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am, you take me the way I am
